Welkomstwoord bij de ontvangst van leden van de Ambassadors’ Spouses Association, 1 juni 2026

Dear members of the Ambassadors’ Spouses Association,

On behalf of the city of The Hague, I warmly welcome you to the Old City Hall.

The Hague is proud of its role as the international city of peace and justice.

Each year, we receive the diplomatic corps.

This tradition highlights the close bond between our city and the international community, which holds such an important place here.

Today, we turn our attention to a group that is often less visible, yet equally important.

That group is you: the partners who support, inspire, and accompany diplomats.

Your role is unique.

You travel alongside your partners, often to a new country, a new culture, a new city.

You begin again each time.

You build a network.

You create a home for your family wherever needed.

And you contribute to diplomatic work, often behind the scenes, yet with great impact.

Your resilience and openness deserve recognition.

Your ability to start anew time and again deserves appreciation.

In The Hague, we believe that a warm welcome extends beyond the professional – it includes partners, families, and the wider diplomatic community who make this city their home.

We understand that an international posting is just as much a transition for spouses and families, and that feeling at home here is essential to a successful and fulfilling experience.

That is why The Hague International Centre is there not only for diplomats, but very much for you as well.

It offers a one-stop-shop for practical matters – from registration and residence formalities to guidance on healthcare, education and daily life.

But it also helps you find your way socially, by connecting you with networks, activities and communities in our city.

Events such as Welcome to The Hague – with the next edition on Monday the 8th of June- are a wonderful way to meet others, discover the city and start building your own network here.

Above all, please know that you are not just accompanying your partners- you are an essential part of our international community, and we are truly delighted to have you here.

The Ambassadors’ Spouses Association plays an important role in The Hague.

You bring people together.

You build a community.

You enrich our city.

I thank you for your presence, for your contribution to the international character of The Hague, and for everything you make possible – often without being seen.

I wish you an inspiring gathering, and above all: a warm home here in our city.
