Toespraak nationale feestdag Qatar, 3 december 2025
Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Good afternoon to all,
Let me first congratulate you on the intended relocation of the embassy to the estate with the historic villa Maarheeze in Wassenaar. Of course, I am sorry that you are leaving The Hague, but I am pleased that Qatar’s representation will be retained for the region.
As Mayor of The Hague, international city of peace, justice, and indeed diplomacy, I am always pleased to reflect on the national days of the countries represented in our region. On national days, we aim to show our interest in, and commitment to, the relationships our countries and cities maintain with one another. This forms the basis of mutual understanding and cooperation; the foundation of lasting relations.
It is an honour once again this year to contribute to the celebration of the national day of the young state of Qatar. A country that acknowledges and values Dutch expertise in the fields of energy, agriculture and water management through close collaboration. A state that also presents itself with confidence as a bridge-builder in international conflicts.
As international city of peace and justice, we are particularly grateful to Qatar for its unwavering efforts to help resolve the conflict in the Middle East through peaceful means. In addition to our countries’ cooperation in trade and technology, Qatar’s mediating role was a key topic during the visit of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to the Netherlands last year.
For all these reasons, I am pleased to join you once again in marking Qatar’s national day. My hope and confidence, also as Mayor of The Hague, lie in the successful continuation of our cooperation and in the steadfast commitment to your mediating role in the Middle East and beyond.
Once again my warmest congratulations.
