Speech by Mayor Jan van Zanen at the NATO Public Forum networking function, June 24, 2025
Good evening,
Welcome to The Hague City Hall.
It is the first time in NATO’s existence that the Netherlands is hosting a NATO summit. It is an honor and an enormous responsibility that The Hague has been given the opportunity to host this crucial meeting of the alliance. A justified choice, because we have been the international city of peace and justice for more than 125 years. Because we house many international organizations and courts. Because NATO has been present here since the 1950’s.
The NATO summit itself will take place behind closed doors. However, the stakes – our shared security – concern us all. NATO, the Dutch government, civil society organizations and the municipality of The Hague therefore consider it important to involve our residents in the summit. To show the world what The Hague has to offer as an international city.
In recent months the municipality has therefore organized The Road to Summit. With numerous Peace and Justice activities for everyone in The Hague. Young and old. You can see an exhibition with some highlights here in the atrium tonight. The Hague Humanity Hub has held the Just Peace Festival with us over the past two weeks. Including challenging dialogues, impressive exhibitions, compelling films, music and dance. Tonight’s function also has a local touch. With jazz provided by a trio from the Hague Conservatory, herring and local beer.
During the NATO Public Forum you will jointly explore the most pressing issues related to our peace and security. Unlike the real NATO meeting, all activities of the Public Forum can be followed live. Unfortunately, you will understand that in these busy days for us, I have not been able to see anything yet. This has made me even more curious about the results of the conversations.
Our safety requires that we be united, sharp and alert. For example, we have recently worked – even more than usual – on strengthening our city’s digital security. From bridges and locks to our municipal system. Especially now it is important to connect and continue to work together for peace and justice. So that our perspectives broaden and we can continue to strive for sustainable solutions to conflicts in the world.
I wish you much wisdom and inspiration. And know that you are always welcome here in The Hague to enjoy it’s beauties, see the sea and the dunes and make peace and love.
