Toespraak Sub City Kolfe Keranio, 2 november 2024
Dear all,
On behalf on the members of my delegation it is an honor to be here in Kolfe Keranio Sub City sharing this opportunity to exchange and connect with all of you directly.
This gathering reflects our shared commitment to greater inclusion of persons with disabilities,
and it is truly inspiring to experience your dedication in action.
In both the Netherlands and Ethiopia,
disability inclusion stands as a key priority.
It’s a commitment that connects us
– it is a vital part of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,
to which both our countries are committed.
The Convention calls on us to create a society where everyone,
regardless of ability,
can participate fully.
Our efforts today here in Kolfe Keranio are helping to fulfill this vision.
In the Netherlands,
The Hague has a leading role in advancing the Local Inclusion Agenda, the LIA.
The LIA is also used and adapted here,
and like in The Hague,
it helps local governments prioritize actions that promote real inclusion.
I am excited to see Kolfe Keranio Sub City’s commitment to this goal,
supporting the full participation of persons with disabilities in decision-making processes.
The “We Are Able!” project is an example of the difference we can make when we work towards inclusion.
This project not only addresses disability inclusion but also promotes food security – a necessity that affects us all.
I learned that nearly 18% of Ethiopia’s population are living with disabilities,
and that most live in extreme poverty and food insecurity.
It is critical that local food systems are accessible and responsive to their needs.
By including persons with disabilities in governance and decision-making around food security like you are practicing here in the sub-city, we can build fairer systems.
Through partnerships like this,
we strengthen our shared knowledge,
enhance mutual learning,
while focusing on inclusion across all facets of local governance.
Thank you again to everyone here for your hard work, and your dedication to inclusion.
Together, let’s continue to build a future where every individual, regardless of ability,
is valued, heard, and empowered to thrive and contribute fully to society.
Thank you.
