Geachte aanwezigen,

en vooral, beste afgestudeerden,

 

Wat bijzonder om samen met jullie deze dag te mogen beleven.

Ik herinner me mijn eigen afstuderen nog goed en realiseer me daarom des te meer hoe speciaal deze dag voor jullie is.

Allereerst wil ik jullie daarom allemaal van harte feliciteren met het succesvol afronden van jullie studie.

Een studie waar jullie veel tijd en energie in hebben gestoken.

Het afgelopen halfjaar was het ook voor jullie niet makkelijk, zo heb ik begrepen.

Net als voor de docenten, uiteraard.

Maar jullie bleken over een behoorlijke portie veerkracht te beschikken en hebben je door corona niet uit het veld laten slaan.

Niet alleen hebben jullie je opleiding tot een goed einde weten te brengen, jullie hebben ook ervaren dat heel veel langs digitale weg mogelijk is.

Bijvoorbeeld het presenteren van een ontwerp.

En aangezien velen van jullie internationaal actief zullen worden of dat al zijn, scheelt dat weer heel wat vliegreizen.

Ik voel me dan ook bevoorrecht dat ik dadelijk jullie ontwerpen wel van nabij mag bewonderen.

En om rond te lopen door het gebouw waar jullie de afgelopen jaren zoveel uren hebben doorgebracht.

 

Den Haag barst van het talent en de creativiteit.

Onze stad telt meer dan duizend beeldende kunstenaars.

Velen van hen hebben, net als jullie, hun opleiding hier genoten.

De Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten staat bijzonder goed aangeschreven.

Iets waar we in Den Haag heel trots op zijn.

Die faam strekt zich uit tot ver over onze landsgrenzen.

Ik heb begrepen dat jullie met 227 zijn en dat jullie uit 46 verschillende landen komen…

Den Haag is dus niet alleen de internationale stad van vrede en recht, maar zeker óók internationale stad van kunst en design.

Overigens heeft de hier aangeboden master Non Linear Narrative veel raakvlakken met ons profiel als centrum van vrede en recht.

Heb begrepen dat het daarbij draait om de vraag hoe kunstmatige intelligentie de democratie beïnvloedt door middel van taal.

Juist de laatste jaren ontwikkelt Den Haag zich meer en meer tot een plek waar wordt nagedacht over de juridische en ethische kwesties van het internet.

En welke rol het internationale recht daarin kan spelen.

Daar sluit deze master dus heel goed bij aan.

Maar ook op andere manieren bewijst de academie dat zij niet alleen letterlijk midden in de stad is gevestigd, maar ook midden in de samenleving staat.

En dan denk ik bijvoorbeeld aan de alumni van de bachelor Interieurarchitectuur en Meubelontwerpen die ontwerpen hebben gemaakt voor de Witte Anjer.

Dat is de prijs die wordt uitgereikt door de Stichting Nationale Veteranendag.

 

Den Haag heb ik de afgelopen weken leren kennen als een open, internationale stad.

En dat bijzondere karakter dankt onze stad aan mensen zoals jullie.

Jullie, die uit zoveel verschillende landen hierheen zijn gekomen om te studeren.

Om je talent verder te ontwikkelen en om te groeien.

Zowel in artistiek opzicht als op persoonlijk vlak.

 

En wat ik nou zo leuk vind:

ongeveer een derde van de studenten van deze academie blijft ook na het afstuderen wonen en werken in Den Haag.

Ik hoop van harte dat velen van jullie ook die keuze zullen maken.

Maar ook als jullie de wijde wereld intrekken, weet dan dat jullie hier steeds welkom zullen zijn.

Nogmaals, van harte gefeliciteerd en heel veel succes gewenst.

and, most of all, graduates,

 

I am delighted to be able to join you here today on this special day.

I still clearly remember my own graduation and therefore I realise  just how important this day is for you.

To start  I would like to warmly congratulate all of you on the successful completion of your degree course.

A course into which you will have put a lot of time and energy.

The last six months will not have been easy for you either, as I have heard.

Nor for the staff.

But you have shown that you are made of sterner stuff and – with  your resilience and perseverance – corona was unable to deflect you from your goals.

Not only have you managed to graduate, you have also seen for yourselves just how much you can do through digital channels.

Making a presentation, for example.

And considering how many of you already are, or will be, internationally active, that will save you quite some travelling time.

I therefore feel privileged to be able to admire your work in person here today from close by.

And to walk around in the building where you have spent so much of your time in recent years.

 

The Hague is brimming with talent and creativity.

More than a thousand artists live in our city.

Many of them, like you, were trained here.

The Royal Academy of Art has a reputation for excellence.

Something that we in The Hague are very proud of.

That reputation extends far beyond our borders.

I understand that there are 227 of you and that you come from 46 different countries…

The Hague is  not only the international city of peace and justice, but most certainly an international city of art and design, as well.

In that context, the Non Linear Narrative master’s programme offered here touches upon many aspects of our profile as a centre for peace and justice.

I understand that this programme looks at the question of how artificial intelligence impacts on democracy through the use of language.

In recent years The Hague increasingly evolved into a place where more thought and attention is being given to the legal and ethical issues surrounding the internet.

And the role that international law could play in that.

This master’s programme ties in very well with that.

But in other ways too, the Academy shows us that – apart from the fact that it stands literally in centre of the city – it is also at the heart of society.

Examples that come to mind include the alumni from the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design bachelor programme who made designs for the Witte Anjer prize.

An award presented by the Dutch Veterans’ Day Association.

 

Over the last couple of weeks I have come to know The Hague as an open, international city.

And the fact that our city has such a remarkable character is because of people like you.

All of you, who have come here from so many different countries to study.

To grow and develop your talent further.

Both artistically and personally.

 

And what I particularly like is that

roughly a third of the students from this art school continue to live and work in The Hague after graduation.

I very much hope that many of you too, will decide to do the same.

But even if you go out into the world, remember you will always be welcome here.

Once again, congratulations and I wish you every success in your future careers.
