Geachte aanwezigen, 

Het is me een genoegen om de DRK Foundation te verwelkomen in Den Haag. Het is heel mooi dat een van de meest gerespecteerde impact investeerders wereldwijd Den Haag heeft gekozen om hier haar Europese hoofdkantoor te vestigen. Juist nu zijn ondernemerschap en internationale samenwerking ontzettend belangrijk om de grote maatschappelijke vraagstukken op te lossen waar we in de wereld voor staan.  

Daarom een hartelijk woord van dan aan de Rabobank, Techleap (van Constantijn van Oranje) en iedereen die heeft bijgedragen aan de komst van de DRK Foundation naar Den Haag. In Den Haag, internationale stad van vrede en recht, werken tienduizenden mensen aan een betere wereld. Bij een van de meer dan 200 internationale organisaties en kennisinstituten.  Maar in onze stad zijn ook ondernemers die met innovaties komen voor humanitaire vraagstukken. Of oplossingen hebben voor de energietransitie of tekorten aan voedsel of drinkwater wereldwijd. 

In totaal telt Den Haag zo’n 300 innovatieve startups die goed zijn voor ruim 4000 banen. Om deze ondernemers te ondersteunen heeft de stad vijf jaar geleden het initiatief genomen om ImpactCity op te zetten.  In het ImpactCity programma willen we de voorlopers in de overgang naar een nieuwe economie ondersteunen. Als ImpactCity willen we een ecosysteem creëren dat de beste ondersteuning en het beste netwerk biedt aan ondernemers die werken aan een betere wereld. Hierbij passen ook financiers die niet enkel uit zijn op financieel gewin maar ook maatschappelijk rendement nastreven. De komst van de DRK Foundation naar Den Haag is een cruciale toevoeging aan dat ecosysteem.  Het geeft ondernemers allereerst toegang tot kapitaal. Ook in een vroege fase van hun onderneming waarin het meestal nog moeilijk is om financiering te krijgen. Daarnaast brengt de DRK Foundation een uniek netwerk naar Den Haag. Een netwerk met bekende ondernemers uit de VS die ondernemers hier kunnen helpen hun producten en diensten wereldwijd op te schalen.    

Afgelopen zaterdag konden we 75 jaar VN vieren. Een bijzonder moment, al was ook deze viering noodgedwongen anders dan gepland. De route naar een betere toekomst hebben de VN uitgestippeld aan de hand van de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen. Om die  bereiken staan we allemaal aan de lat: De internationale gemeenschap, steden, burgers en ook ondernemers. We weten dat het geen gemakkelijke opgave is. We staan voor grote uitdagingen. Maar ik weet zeker dat we ze aankunnen. 

Omdat we kunnen rekenen op de kracht van ondernemers. Omdat we mogen vertrouwen op instanties als de DRK Foundation. Betrokken ondernemers en betrokken  financiers zijn de motor van de maatschappelijke vooruitgang. Mensen met hart voor hun zaak. Én voor de wereld. Mannen en vrouwen zoals u die dag in, dag uit bewijzen dat het kan: goed doen én zaken doen.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome the DRK Foundation to The Hague. It is good that one of the world’s most respected impact investors has chosen to establish its European headquarters here in The Hague. Now in particular, entrepreneurship and international cooperation are going to be extremely important if we are to solve the major social issues facing us in the world.    

Therefore our warm thanks to the Rabobank, Techleap (of Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands) and everyone else who helped to bring the DRK Foundation to The Hague. In The Hague, international city of peace and justice, tens of thousands of people – in more than 200 international organisations and research institutes – are hard at work to create a better world. There are also entrepreneurs in our city who have come up with innovations for humanitarian issues. Or who have found solutions for the energy transition, food shortages or clean drinking water worldwide. 

The Hague has roughly 300 innovative startups which, altogether, provide for more than 4000 jobs. To support these business owners, five years ago the municipality took the step of launching its ImpactCity programme.  The aim of this programme is to support the frontrunners in the transition to a new, sustainable economy. As an ecosystem for sustainable business, created here in The Hague, ImpactCity is a leader in Europe. Even the European Commission has said: for the best support and the best network, as a sustainable entrepreneur you need to be in The Hague. This also includes financiers who are looking not just for financial profit, but who also want to see a social return. The arrival of the DRK Foundation in The Hague is a vital addition to that ecosystem. First and foremost, it gives business owners access to capital. Including in the early days of their venture when it is often still difficult to find finance. The DRK Foundation further brings a unique network to The Hague. A network of well-known US business owners who can help entrepreneurs here to scale-up their products and services globally.    

Last Saturday we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the UN. A remarkable moment, despite the fact that out of necessity these celebrations could not go ahead as planned. The UN has set out the route to a better future based on the Sustainable Development Goals. We all have a part to play in achieving these goals: The international community, cities, citizens and entrepreneurs. We know it is far from easy. We are facing major challenges. But I am sure that we can handle them ultimately. 

Because we can count on the strength of entrepreneurs. Because we can rely on organisations like the DRK Foundation. Because it is engaged entrepreneurs and financiers who drive social progress. People with a passion for what they do. And a passion for the world. People like you, who every day show that it is possible: to do business and do good at the same time.
